Genesis 1:1–2 states, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” These verses say that at the beginning of Day 1, the whole world was watery.
The Scripture is clear that all things were created by God and through His power:
- “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” (John 1:1–3)
- “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” (Hebrews 11:3)
Further, in the only part of Scripture that God wrote with His own hand, God said “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day” (Exodus 20:11, the 4th Commandment). Given these verses, it is clear that God created everything during the six days of Creation Week. The earth (with water), space (which was empty, except for the earth), time, and light were created on Day One. None of these things existed before Day One (Hebrews 11:3, Colossians 1:16).
